How is a Bio.design pool built?

A Bio.design natural pool is built differently from a traditional swimming pool. Instead of starting with a rigid prefabricated or reinforced concrete shell, the process begins directly with the ground, which is shaped according to the project and the characteristics of the space where the pool will be installed.

This unique construction system makes it possible to go beyond the typical geometries of traditional swimming pools and create each project entirely to measure, following the natural contours of the ground and establishing a more seamless connection between water, garden and landscape.

Bio.design’s patented construction technology makes it possible to create organic shapes, beach entries, seating areas, submerged walkways and different depths, adapting each pool to the available space, the needs of those who will use it and the surrounding environment.

Behind the natural appearance of a Bio.design pool, however, lies a precise sequence of layers, materials and construction processes, each with a specific technical and structural function.

So… how is a Bio.design pool built?

1. The excavation shapes the pool

Everything begins with the design and the subsequent shaping of the ground.

The excavation does more than simply create the space that will contain the pool: it already defines its shape, depths and many of its distinctive features.

This is when the swimming areas, beach entries, 45° walls, seating areas and submerged walkways begin to take shape.

The ability to shape the ground provides considerable design freedom and makes it possible to create bespoke pools without being restricted by the typical geometries of prefabricated or concrete structures.

2. The protective fabric

Once the excavation has been shaped, a specific protective fabric is laid over the ground. This layer separates and protects the waterproofing system from the underlying soil and prepares the surface for the next stage of construction.

3. Waterproofing liner and system installation

An EPDM liner is laid over the protective fabric. This flexible waterproof membrane perfectly follows the shape of the excavation and forms the waterproof base of the pool.

At this stage, the pipes and technical components required by the project are also installed, including inlets, suction points, lighting and any systems for air massage, waterfalls and other accessories.

Once these elements have been installed, work can begin on the structural and finishing layers that characterize Bio.design technology.

4. Reinforcement mesh for the base layer

Once waterproofing is complete, construction of the structural part of the pool begins.

A first reinforcement mesh is installed over the liner, preparing the surface for the next structural layer.

5. The structural base coating

The structural base coating, part of the patented Bio.design system, is applied over the first mesh.

The structural coating is made using specially formulated resins and quartz. According to technical data published by Bio.design, it offers flexural tensile strength twice that of structural concrete.

This creates a strong structure without the need for a traditional reinforced concrete shell.

6. Intermediate structural mesh

The layered system is further reinforced with a second intermediate structural mesh.

Positioned between the base layer and the final layer, it contributes to the strength of the entire system while preparing the surface for the final finish.

The technology has been designed to distribute loads and improve material performance while maintaining the design flexibility required to create shapes and geometries that would be difficult to achieve with a traditional pool.

7. The finishing layer

The final stage gives the Bio.design pool its definitive appearance.

The finishing layer creates the pool’s distinctive textured surface, allowing colours, textures and combinations to be customized so that the pool integrates visually with the surrounding landscape.

At this stage, the characteristic Bio.design expansion joints are also completed. These elements perform both a technical and aesthetic function. On the one hand, they help reduce mechanical stresses caused by the natural settling of the ground, helping to prevent cracks; on the other, they become genuine decorative features.

The joints can be created in different colours and finishes and arranged in completely customized patterns, producing natural chromatic effects across the pool floor and the water surface.

This is where technology and aesthetics come together: the technical structure is completed with a surface designed to evoke the natural appearance of beaches and bodies of water, customized down to the smallest detail.

Once the finishes and all systems included in the project have been completed, the pool can be filled and finally become part of the garden.

A pool integrated into the landscape

Excavation, protective fabric, waterproof liner, structural meshes and multiple coating layers: behind the natural appearance of a Bio.design pool lies a precise, patented construction technology.

A system that goes beyond the traditional reinforced concrete structure and provides greater freedom when designing shapes, depths and areas dedicated to wellbeing.

A Bio.design pool is much more than a pool, precisely because it is designed and shaped in harmony with the landscape and its surroundings.
